Ultimate Level of Human Computer Interaction

Artificial-Intelligence

The ultimate level of HCI entails developing computing devices that can work more autonomously. This technology is commonly referred to as artificial intelligence (AI). Although the AI field has made some progress, the technology available today only has limited application such as driving a car and conducting internet search (Crawford, 2017). I anticipate a future situation where this technology can be perfected to perform broader and more complex tasks such as learning, planning, and solving problems. AI presents various benefits to society including eradication of problematic diseases, improving productivity, enhancing safety and efficiency transportation system, and improving essential services such as security.

There are, however, various concerns regarding the development of this technology. One of the main concerns is that the technology may be applied for destructive purposes (Crawford, 2017). For instance, this technology may be used to create autonomous weapons that are designed to kill without the control of humans. Another concern is that devices that utilize this technology may become smarter than humans, develop divergent goals, and establish methods of realizing these goals. This scenario has been envisioned in various literatures and films including The Matrix.

To avert the dangers described above and others, there are certain boundaries that should be observed when advancing AI technologies. One of these boundaries entails ensuring this technology is not deployed in war situation (Hammond, 2016). This would dehumanize the war process resulting in significant destruction. Another boundary is that the technology should not be used to take over emotional tasks such as care giving.
